Restoring the ancient places with The Beautiful Land Initiative

Roman Theatre, Tiberias Israel
1st Century Roman Theatre, Tiberias Israel

It's early May. The green that comes with Israel's winter is fading into the famous bible-land golden yellow that commands the theme of the landscape for the majority of the year. Nestled into the side of a hill just up from the western shore of the Sea of Galilee lay the remains of a 1st century Roman theatre. This Roman theatre served ancient Tiberias in a variety of purposes from business, to orations of all kinds, and visual arts like singing, dances, and plays.

Roman theatres were key features of Roman cities, along with another key feature, the Cardo. A Roman Cardo is the main artery, the North-South road of a Roman city. The significance of a Cardo is in its name. The Cardo, as in, cardio or heart.

We have had the pleasure of collaborating with the Hebrew University's Dr. Katia Cytryn-Silverman on an archeological dig in ancient Tiberias. The plan is to excavate a portion of the Cardo with a special focus on public and religious buildings.

Take a look at some of the shots and sign up to be a part of this dig and hear from us about future excavations!

The Beautiful Land Initiative is a Nonprofit org that focuses on environmental stewardship including projects that promote the biblical vision of the restoration of Israel. BLI has a special focus on Israel in the areas of litter cleanups, installation of public trash bins in strategic locations, tree planting (afforestation), media production, and now, archeological excavations.

BLI promotes cultural transformation by way of ongoing volunteer efforts. For example, the active presence and consistent vision of volunteers coming to beautify Israel by picking up someone else's trash has proven to be an effective vehicle to inspire, educate, equip, and empower individuals, communities, and municipalities to make changes that benefit all. To date, BLI volunteers have collected more than 110 tons of litter from public places.
